Background

Environment Africa a member of the consortium led by CARE International Zimbabwe which is implementing the TAKUNDA project in Buhera, Chivi, Mutare and Zaka Districts of Zimbabwe seeks to recruit an experienced, dynamic and innovative Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Specialist to be based at the Takunda Project office in Mutare. The Takunda project seeks to empower women; create sustainable livelihoods; facilitate adoption of improved practices/technologies; improve governance and social accountability; and ultimately strengthen HH and community resilience.

Roles and responsibilities

Ensure strategies to enhance sustainability and resilience of proposed activities are designed and implemented; Determine together with other stakeholder’s priority disaster risks and priority areas, for communities and households; Facilitate development of disaster risk reduction plans, at community, household, and projects; Include disaster risk reduction efforts into strategic integrating structures and processes; Support implementation of disaster risk reduction initiatives at household, community and project level; Identifying and implementing mechanism for the dissemination of early warning; Develop an integrated information management and communication system for disaster risk management; Create awareness, promoting a culture of risk avoidance and establishing good media relations; Support implementation of social transformation processes focussed of resilience building.

Qualifications

Advanced university degree (Master's degree or higher) in Disaster Risk Reduction (with emphasis on environment and rural community development, natural sciences, social and political studies, development (emphasis on environment or conflict), or another demonstrably relevant field is essential.
