The Leadership for Africa (LfA) Scholarship Programme is designed to support the academic growth and development of young refugees and national scholars from Ethiopia, Uganda, Somalia, South-Sudan, and Tanzania at higher education institutions in Germany.
The program aims to contribute to the education of future leaders who will play a crucial role in the advancement of their home countries. This article provides an overview of the scholarship program, including eligibility criteria, application process, and benefits.
Objective of the Scholarship Programme
The primary objective of the Leadership for Africa Scholarship Programme is to support the academic qualification and advancement of young refugees and national scholars from the aforementioned African countries.
By providing scholarships for Master’s studies in Germany, the program aims to empower and educate individuals who will become leaders in their respective fields. The scholarship program focuses on all fields of study except for medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, law, the arts, and architecture.
Additionally, all scholarship recipients are required to participate in a complementary training program in good governance, civil society, and career development.
Eligibility Criteria
The scholarship program targets two groups of individuals:
- Highly qualified refugees who hold refugee status and meet the necessary qualifications for Master’s studies in Germany. The following conditions must be met:
- Holding refugee status in their host countries, granted before April 3rd, 2022.
- Country of asylum must be Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, or Uganda.
- Completion of a Bachelor’s degree at the time of application.
- Highly qualified graduates from Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, or Uganda who meet the necessary qualifications for Master’s studies in Germany. The following conditions must be met:
- Citizenship of either Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, or Uganda.
- Country of residence is Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, or Uganda.
- Completion of a Bachelor’s degree at the time of application.
Application Process and Funding
The scholarship includes a German language course in Germany for up to six months before the start of university studies. It covers tuition fees for a Master’s degree program at a public or state-recognized university in Germany, starting in the winter term of 2024 (September/October 2024). Additionally, selected candidates are required to participate in the mandatory training program called LEAD!
The duration of funding is determined by the standard period of study for the chosen program, which is generally two years for eligible Master’s programs. The scholarship provides a monthly scholarship rate of 934 EURO, health, accident, and private/personal liability insurance in Germany, travel allowance, yearly study allowance, and if applicable, a monthly rent subsidy and allowance for accompanying family members.
Selection Process
The selection process involves a pre-selection based on the submitted application documents. Only complete applications with all mandatory documents will be considered. Preselected candidates will then be invited to a digital interview conducted by an independent selection committee consisting of university professors.
The selection criteria include academic achievements, language skills, motivation, and a convincing description of the planned studies in Germany.
