The Community Water Alliance (CWA) is a grassroots-based Civil Society Organization that does work on 3 program areas namely: WASH (water sanitation and hygiene), Environment and Climate issues.

CWA is implementing the Joint Community Waste Management Project (JOCWAM) project which is a joint initiative with City of Harare Glen View district that seeks to leverage community-based institutions’ infrastructure in Glen View to initiate a waste management program that places reduce, recycle and re-use at the centre of community-based plastics and solid waste management discourse, programming and campaigns. The project does this by placing community stewardship and 3Rs (reduce, recycle and reuse) issues at the forefront of the Glen View waste management system well in advance of the waste collection schedules by the City of Harare. While the Government of Zimbabwe has focused on environmental protection and improved community livelihoods as desired outcomes in the National Development Strategy 1 pillar on the environment, the two institutions understand that critical community work around community-based waste management must begin early to accommodate the slow rate at which behaviour change taking place and to accommodate the new turn towards community-based waste management that is at the centre of JOCWAM’s work.

A baseline survey will be done to determine the type and quantity of waste generated at shopping centres, markets and household levels in Glen View and assess the potential for recycling. The survey will also look at gender dynamics in waste management.
