Contract: Full time for 16 months Zvitambo is a multidisciplinary public health research institute with the mission of improving maternal and child health in Zimbabwe, and to apply its findings to improve health globally. Zvitambo conducts research and provides technical support and education to reduce the burden of malnutrition and infectious diseases, in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Child Care. Zvitambo is registered as a non-profit company with the Ministry of Justice, and operates from a head office in Harare, and a field site in Shurugwi. Job Summary Zvitambo, is looking for a Social Scientist Graduate Research Assistant to work on a project that will broaden our understanding of the social, cultural and historical contexts within which current nutrition interventions in rural Zimbabwe are taking place. The postholder will provide research support to realize the objectives of the project entitled “Building trans-disciplinary partnerships for exploring the impact of population displacement on nutrition interventions in rural Zimbabwe”. Given the significance of rural-urban, regional and overseas migration, the project will place specific emphasis on how these processes impact on two aspects of nutrition: household food security and agricultural production capacity. The postholder will be based at the Zvitambo head office in Harare and will be required to spend short but repeated periods of time at the Shurugwi field centre. Additionally, a period of up to 3 months will be spent in the School of Geography, Queen Mary University of London, UK. They will undertake literature and database searches and interpret and present the findings from this research; conduct and help analyse mixed-methods social network survey with individuals and organizations; support a partnership development workshop; contribute towards the design, planning, delivery and analysis of participatory research in Shurugwi; ensure data is kept securely. Qualifications The Social Science Graduate Research Assistant must have: a minimum of a Master’s degree in a relevant social science subject; experience conducting literature searches using appropriate databases; experience using qualitative research methods, including conducting semi-structure interviews and focus group discussions; experience designing and conducting questionnaire surveys; excellent organisational skills and the ability to take the lead in organising events with a variety of stakeholders; the ability to manage and prioritise own workload and organise research within the project timetable; computer literacy with a strong proficiency in Microsoft Office software (including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint); proven team working skills; experience leading a team of qualitative researchers; be fluent in in Shona and English; strong written and verbal communication skills in English and Shona; have a clean driver’s licence. It is preferable if the candidate has previous knowledge of rural-urban, regional and overseas migration patterns affecting rural districts in Zimbabwe; knowledge of impact of migration on household food security and agricultural production capacity; experience of working within a research organization and understands the research and NGO ecosystem in Zimbabwe.
