The Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment enjoys an international reputation. One of the core aspects
of our vision as a Faculty is to develop outstanding graduates and scholars, who contribute to society and address

skills, practical ingenuity and creativity, good communication and high ethical standards and professionalism, as
well as the ability to be lifelong learners.
The Faculty is seeking to appoint a permanent, full-time South African academic from the designated groups at
Senior Lecturer level in the Engineering or Built Environment disciplines. This person will be expected to contribute
to and initiate academic development projects in departments and/or the Faculty. In addition, the person will be
required to fulfil undergraduate teaching and learning responsibilities and to conduct scholarly research in
education in engineering and or the built environment. We invite suitably qualified persons to apply for this
position.
Minimum requirements include:
• A Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering or Built Environment discipline;
• A PhD in Education with an Engineering and the Built Environment focus OR a PhD with an Engineering
Education focus.
• A good research record.
• A good teaching experience in engineering or built environment.
• A record of involvement in academic development activities at an undergraduate level.
Advantages - Demonstrated qualities that would inform the level of appointment:
• Preference will be given to candidates with a PhD specialising in education in engineering or the built
environment.
• Evidence of significant experience of initiating and contributing to academic development.
• Previous teaching experience in higher education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
• A research publication record in peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
The successful candidate is expected to:
• Provide support to staff in the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and learning space.
• Facilitate student support structures in the Department and/or Faculty.
• Work closely with the Academic Development team in the Faculty.
• Work closely with the Head of Department and Programme Convenors in supporting teaching pedagogies,
curriculum design and ensuring student success.
• Contribute to excellence in research at UCT.
• Conduct research, supervise postgraduate students, and publish in refereed journals.
• Participate in the management and administration of the Department and/or Faculty.
• Be socially responsive by engaging with community and/or industry through teaching and research.
• Complete a PhD (if not already held).
The annual cost of employment, including benefits is R887 294.
