Description :

Eligibility criteria Candidate age: between 18 and 29 throughout the entire duration of their assignment. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations. Description of task Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Programme Policy Officer or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UN Volunteer will:
  • Support the research agenda of the office, with a particular emphasis on linkages between social protection and climate change, including shock responsive social protection and climate risk finance
  • Analyze information on social protection, disaster risk and other issues for countries under the area of responsibility of WFP Barbados.
  • Support the implementation of conferences, trainings and panels, including through preparing content and reporting.
  • Contribute to the development of strategies for engagement and identifying partnership opportunities.
  • Develop advocacy and communication tools, including factsheets, power point presentations and support the preparation of donor proposals
  • Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.
Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities:
  • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);
  • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
  • Provide annual and end of assignment self- reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities.
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
  • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.Qualifications/Requirements Required degree level: Bachelor degree or equivalent Education - Additional Comments:
    • A university degree in one or more of the following disciplines: Economics, International Affairs, Social Sciences, Development Studies, Climate Change, Geography, Human Security or a field relevant to international development assistance.
    Required experience: 12 Months Experience remark:
    • At least one 1-year professional experience (cumulative, including fulltime, part-time and internships), including experience with United Nations agencies.
    • Work experience analyzing issues related to social protection is an asset, as is experience working in the UN or other international development organization;
    • Knowledge of social protection, climate change, international development, socio-economic and social policy
      • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills;
      • Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing, including experience producing communications products;
    • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels;
    • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel;
    • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with office technology equipment;
    • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines;
    • Sound security awareness;
    • Have affinity with or interest in social protection, climate change and volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.
