The African Awareness of Cancer and Early Diagnosis (AWACAN-ED) project has been awarded an NIHR Global Research Group grant to improve early diagnosis of cancer in Sub-Saharan Africa. The project aims to answer important questions about how to encourage appropriate help-seeking behaviour among people with possible cancer symptoms and how to deliver high-quality, accessible, and equitable cancer referral and diagnosis services.
AWACAN-ED research team seeks to appoint an experienced, dynamic, suitably trained, competent, talented, multi-tasking, self-motivated and qualified researcher to fill the position of Junior Research Fellow. This is a full-time 1-year contract position, renewable on a yearly basis for 4 years subject to good performance.
Job description
Implementation and overseeing all aspects of the AWACAN-ED project in Harare and Bulawayo. Monitoring study progress, maintaining records of project activities. Responsible for producing monthly, quarterly, and annual performance reports for the project. Development and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure compliance within the study. Oversee regulatory issues including timely submission of applications to applicable Institutional Review Boards and Regulatory Authorities and obtaining approvals. Participating in the hiring, supervision, motivation, and management of field staff. Ensuring project staff are appropriately qualified and have current training in required trainings such as Good Clinical Practices, Ethics training and all certifications as per local guidelines and sponsor requirements. Overseeing preparedness of interview guides, data collection and data collection tools. Liaising with project partners and relevant stakeholders on project matters & attending relevant project meetings. Supporting post-graduate students and the development of e-interventions. Contributing to scientific write-up of results, abstract writing, manuscript writing and scientific presentations at international, regional, and local meetings. Any other business as assigned.
Qualifications
PhD in Health Sciences, PhD in Social Sciences, or MBChB. At least 3 years’ relevant experience in supervising postgraduate students, health system, interventions, conducting cancer research, research coordination, implementing health research projects, and project management. A multi-tasking leader with critical thinking skills, able to demonstrate administrative, financial management, developing project management tools and overseeing quality control. Possession of a high level of integrity with strong interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills, with a relevant publication record. Proven experience in either qualitative or quantitative research skills. Computer literacy with proficiency in STATA or equivalent statistical packages; MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
