Consultancy - Re-usable Menstrual Pads: Africare

Africare is an International non-governmental organization working in Zimbabwe to reduce poverty among vulnerable communities through interventions in Agriculture & Food Security, Enterprise Development; Health, HIV & AIDS, Nutrition, Water, Sanitation & Hygiene and Women’s Empowerment. Africare is working with UNICEF, the Government of Zimbabwe and the Rural District Councils of Zvimba and Hurungwe in implementing the WASH in Schools (WinS) project aimed at improving the learning environment in school. This is being done by ensuring that school girls have access to affordable sanitary ware and education on menstrual hygiene management that will lessen absenteeism, reduce stigmatization and reduce the number of school girls who drop out of school because of menstrual challenges.


Africare, therefore, is seeking the services of a consultant to build the capacity of school health clubs in the production of re-usable menstrual pads (RUMPs) and mentoring of school health clubs to start income generating projects.


Specific activities of the assignment include:

Training two groups of school health masters in the production of re-usable menstrual pads (RUMPs) and pants; Promoting mentorship of the groups in RUMP making in schools as a business; and Incorporate training of school health masters and school girls in reproductive health and menstrual hygiene management.


Qualifications/competences

The assignment requires: An organisation or individual with experience and knowledge in making of RUMPs and pants using local materials; At least 5 years’ experience in responding to menstrual hygiene management in Zimbabwe; Demonstrated understanding of the issues affecting girls education in schools; Demonstrated capacity in training on RUMP making; and Expertise in business development
