Background
Locomotion Africa Trading as Mobility for Africa is committed to bringing electric mobility solutions to rural women. The idea is to build a model that is tailored to the cultural, economic and social realities for rural communities in Southern Africa that could be scaled up in a targeted and tailored way.
MFA want to overcome one of the biggest development obstacles in Africa, mobility, by bringing the electric vehicle revolution to the majority, especially rural women, through affordable, sustainable, efficient transport solutions using green energy supply and responsible battery management.
By doing so we aim to empower rural women in Sub-Saharan Africa with transport that can help them save time, better sell their goods at the market, take their children to the clinic and school, collect water, improve their economic opportunities within the household and the local community; and expand access to green energy for transport to reduce carbon emissions.
Tough sturdy renewable energy charged electric bikes and tricycles, branded and backstopped by trained community support services, provide an avenue for marginalized and poor families to overcome distances to services and contribute to dynamic local economies. Powered through community based off grid energy supply, e-tricycles will provide the incentive for increased economic opportunities, creating new local markets and enhancing rural livelihoods.
To build the evidence to attract investors and strategic partners, the pilot, launched in February 2019, is gathering qualitative and quantitative evidence to demonstrate proof of concept and potential scale up. The pilot, in its second phase, will seek to monitor and evaluate the model, identify feedback that can improve the social impact, and provide guidance on areas that can be improved.
