Top Tips To Create A CV That Guarantees You A Call For An Interview
Here is a list of the top tips that can help you create a powerful CV.
1. When it comes to a CV, the lesser pages the better. 3 pages are better than 4 and 2 pages are better than 3. You need to remove certain unnecessary information on your cvs like full address, references or other personal information like dependents or marital status.
2. Remove a picture it’s unnecessary unless you are required to include it on a CV. A picture on your CV brings grounds for discrimination towards age, appearance or race. Lastly, not all pics are professional, just look at other people’s LinkedIn profiles.
3. Remove objective statements because it’s about you and doesn’t show what you can bring to the company. Replace objective statements with a streamlined professional summary which shows your skills, achievements, attributes and qualifications.
4. Your CV should have an active and not a passive voice so, please use action verbs which highlight impact like monitored, pioneered, engineered, led etc. Back up this with proper scenarios.
5. Don’t write the reasons why you left a job on a CV because that’s what the interviews are for otherwise, you are wasting precious space on the CV. If you were fired for example, are you going to write that on a CV? My advice, leave that type of information completely.
6. When choosing a font please do not exceed 12 on font size it should not go below 10 and the spacing should not be more than 1.5. Also, don’t be tempted to use Word Art.
7. Please do not attach your certificates on a CV to make it a single document, it will make it unnecessarily long and also when scanned for ATS you maybe ranked higher. Remember that even on job applications, certificates are required at a later stage.
8. Do not write your expected salary or employment grade on a CV because remember your CV may be put aside because of unreasonable expectations. Also, you need to show your value even before you talk about salary expectations. Remember past performance is a measure of future performance.
