Organizational Overview The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) works toward the goals of the 2030 Agenda by implementing its Strategic Framework. This framework focuses on creating more efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable agrifood systems for improved production, nutrition, environmental sustainability, and overall quality of life, ensuring no one is left behind.
The Infrastructure and Facilities Management Service (CSLI), part of the Logistics Services Division (CSL), is responsible for maintaining FAO headquarters and providing services to FAO staff. CSLI also supports FAO Decentralized Offices with facilities maintenance, infrastructure activities, technical projects, and implementing systems to reduce their carbon footprint. The service promotes the Corporate Environmental Responsibility Strategy across all FAO offices.
This position is in the Facilities Management Service (CSLI) at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy.
Reporting Lines The incumbent will report to the Facilities Management Officer of the Infrastructure and Facilities Management Service and work within the Corporate Environmental Responsibility (CER) team in the CSLI office.
Technical Focus The primary focus of this role is to lead the communication strategy for the Corporate Environmental Responsibility team and assist with tasks related to the implementation of the FAO Corporate Environmental Responsibility Strategy.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities The incumbent will manage and coordinate internal and external communication on environmental efficiency, including:
- Implementing the CER communication strategy through drafting articles, annual reports, and bi-monthly newsletters.
- Designing visuals for communication campaigns promoting sustainable behaviours at work.
- Organizing training sessions and workshops for FAO employees on environmental responsibility.
- Researching and writing news articles and case studies on recent environmental improvements for FAO’s intranet, internet, and Greening the Blue websites.
- Updating CER intranet and internet pages.
- Researching and preparing responses to queries on environmental management and developing templates and tools to help FAO colleagues measure and manage environmental impacts.
- Managing the MS Teams channels for CER focal points to enhance internal communication.
Additionally, the incumbent will support the implementation of the Corporate Environmental Responsibility Strategy by:
- Coordinating an interdivisional working group for strategy implementation.
- Liaising with other units to ensure coordination in areas such as environmental safeguards and sustainable procurement.
- Managing behavioural science projects aimed at fostering sustainable behaviours (e.g., waste sorting, water conservation) in FAO offices.
- Communicating with field offices for the annual GHG inventory.
- Assisting the CER team with environmental data analysis, dashboard implementation, and monitoring of GHG emissions.
- Supporting the rollout of the FAO Environmental Management System.
Collaboration with FAO Communications (OCC) The incumbent will work closely with the Office of Communications (OCC) and follow FAO standards and clearance processes for all communication materials, including:
- FAO Strategic Framework 2022-31.
- FAO social media policy, branding guidelines, FAOSTYLE, FAO terminology, and the list of FAO country names.
Minimum Requirements
- Advanced university degree in Sustainable Development, Environmental Studies, Environmental/Energy Engineering, or related fields.
- At least 1 year of experience in sustainable development, environmental sustainability, climate change, GHG emissions accounting, or Environmental Management Systems.
- Proficiency in English (level C) and limited knowledge of another FAO official language (French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, or Russian).

- Knowledge of Italian is an asset.
- Experience working within the UN system is highly valued.
