President Emmerson Mnangagwa has conferred Provincial Hero Status to the late Zimdancehall star Saul Musaka popularly known as Soul Jah Love.
Zanu PF Secretary for Administration Obert Mpofu has announced the latest development.
“His Excellency, the President and First Secretary of Zanu (PF), Cde E.D. Mnangagwa has conferred a Liberation Hero Status to the late Cde Soul Muzavazi Musaka who passed away on 16th February 2021 at Mbuya Dorcus Hospital. The family can be contacted through our Harare Provincial office.
“I shall be most grateful if you would make the usual armaments for his burial and payment of benefits to his family. He is from Harare province,” read the letter.
The Herald reports that the conferment of the liberation hero status has over the years changed in form and context.
The liberation hero status is no longer limited to those who played a part in the liberation struggle, even those who actively advocated for the emancipation and liberation of people in post-independence Zimbabwe are now being accorded the same honor.
Soul Jah Love died on Tuesday in Harare following a long battle with Sugar Diabetes. He was 31.
He is not the first musician to be honored with liberation hero status.
Late Dendera music chanter Simon Chimbetu and Chinx Chingaira, born Dick Chingaira Makoni, were both declared liberation war heroes when they died in 2005 and 2017 respectively.
Internationally recognized musician, the late Oliver Mtukudzi was also conferred with national hero status when he died in 2019 although he had no liberation war history.
Soul Jah Love breaks his own record of being honored with the status when he died aged 31.
Soul Jah love’s songs include Ndongomira pamamonya ipapo, Ndini uya uya, Dai hupenyu hwaitengwa, Zvihombe zviri pandiri,, Pazai.
