The Migration Policy Institute (MPI), an independent and nonpartisan think tank headquartered in Washington, DC, is dedicated to studying global migration.
The Demetrios G. Papademetriou Young Scholars Program, named after MPI’s co-founder, has been instrumental in training over 375 emerging migration scholars and policy analysts.

Flexible Opportunities: Remote and U.S. Based
The Migration Policy Institute Internship program offers flexibility, with options for both remote and in-person internships, accommodating individuals residing outside the United States. The program operates on a cycle basis, with application deadlines as follows:
- Spring Semester (January – April): Apply by November 1
- Summer Semester (May – August): Apply by March 1
- Fall Semester (September – December): Apply by July 1
Wide-Ranging Internship Roles
Interns can choose from three distinct areas: Research, Communications and Events, and the Executive Office.
MPI conducts comprehensive analysis and evaluation of migration and refugee policies across local, national, and international contexts.
The institute seeks to address the challenges and opportunities posed by large-scale migration, voluntary or forced, in an increasingly interconnected world.
Research Interns’ Engagement in Key Themes
Research Interns will immerse themselves in one of MPI’s four program areas:
- U.S. Immigration: Examining asylum, border management, immigration enforcement, legal status, and more.
- International Migration: Comparative analysis of refugee resettlement, labor migration, and integration policies.
- U.S. Immigrant Integration: Focusing on education, training, policy, and services.
- Latin America and Caribbean Initiative: Evaluating migration management, regional policies, and integration challenges, with Spanish proficiency required.
Research Intern responsibilities encompass:
- Independent research and policy analysis
- Drafting papers and literature summaries
- Updating MPI’s online data tools
- Supporting migration-related events
- Monitoring and summarizing relevant public and private events
Empowering Communication and Event Interns
The Communications Intern works with the Communications team, engaging in marketing, media tracking, and social media activities.
Multimedia skills are essential for this role. Tasks may include crafting digital campaigns, tracking media mentions, and disseminating MPI publications. The Events Intern, also part of the Communications team, assists in planning MPI’s events and meetings.

The MPI internship program spans four months across three cycles: Spring, Summer, and Fall. Internships can be either full-time or part-time, with stipends available.
Applicants should possess strong communication skills, both written and oral, and be adept at independent and collaborative work. Various backgrounds, from college students to early-career professionals, are encouraged to apply.
