Requirements To Study Hospitality Courses At UNISA, UJ, And UP
Various institutions in South Africa offer a study in hospitality. Hospitality courses can enable you to work in many countries hence it is one of the courses you may consider if you want to move abroad.
Hospitality Management and Tourism are the studies of the hospitality industry.
Not every institution has the same requirements that students need to meet in order to gain entry. Nonetheless, here are a few institutions offering Hospitality courses and each of their requirements:
The University of South Africa (Unisa)
Unisa offers an NQF level 7 undergraduate program in Consumer Science Hospitality Management.
Should students wish to enroll in the Bachelor of Consumer Sciences Hospitality Management program at Unisa, any of the following points are valid for minimum admissions:
- National Senior Certificate (NSC) (Degree endorsement) or equivalent with at least 50% in the language of teaching and learning and 40% in Mathematics or Technical Mathematics or 60% in Mathematical Literacy.
- Senior Certificate (SC) with matriculation exemption or qualify for the exemption from the Matriculation Board with at least a D symbol on HG or a C symbol on SG in the language of teaching and learning and with at least an E symbol on HG or a D symbol on SG in Mathematics.
- An appropriate Higher Certificate that satisfies the Language and Mathematics requirements.
Applicants who do not meet the above-mentioned requirements are advised to consider applying for a lower level qualification for which they meet the statutory and additional requirements.
University of Johannesburg (UJ)
In its Department of Tourism, the University of Johannesburg offers a postgraduate Bachelor of Tourism and Hospitality Management Honours qualification.
The admission requirements include:
- Any student in possession of a relevant undergraduate degree, Advanced Diploma or BTech and who has appropriate knowledge of Tourism and Hospitality or appropriate subject knowledge on NQF Level: 7.
- Applicants with any other Hospitality or Food and Beverage Operations related qualification (at NQF Level: 7), based on all final year modules will also be considered.
- A potential student must have an average mark of 60% in the final year of an undergraduate degree or an average of 60% for all the modules of their Advanced Diploma (or BTech qualification).
- A potential student must have adequate English language proficiency by passing a literacy test, and selection may include an interview.
Students can also venture into Master’s and/or Ph.D. qualifications if they wish.
University of Pretoria (UP)
The University of Pretoria offers undergraduate qualifications in Consumer Science (a BConSci qualification), which offers students the opportunity to specialize in various fields of interest, namely clothing retail management, food retail management, and hospitality studies.
Admission requirements include:
- Candidates who are in possession of a certificate that is deemed by the University to be equivalent to the required National Senior Certificate with university endorsement, candidates who are graduates from another tertiary institution or have been granted the status of a graduate of such an institution, and candidates who are graduates of another faculty at the University of Pretoria may apply.
- Life Orientation is excluded from the calculation of the Admission Point Score (APS).
- Grade 11 results are used for the conditional admission of prospective students. Final admission is based on Grade 12 results.
The closing date is an administrative admission guideline for non-selection programs.
Once a non-selection program is full and has reached the institutional targets, then that program will be closed for further admissions, irrespective of the closing date. However, if the institutional targets have not been met by the closing date, then that program will remain open for admissions until the institutional targets are met.
Please note that the Faculty does not accept GED and School of Tomorrow qualifications for entry into programs.
