Sibongile Khumalo Dies After Stroke Complications
World renowned musician, Sibongile Khumalo has died.
Sibongile Khumalo was 63 at the time of her passing.
Her family confirmed that she died of stroke related complications.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr Sibongile Khumalo our iconic, world-celebrated South African singer, affectionately known as Ma’Mngoma (24 September 1957 – 28 January 2021)” they said
She was lauded as one of the greatest musicians of her time, and her style inspired the creation of new music by South African composers, both in the classical, opera as well as jazz genres.
Sibongile Khumalo’s singing talent ranged from opera to jazz, choral music and musical theatre.
She also held the Order of Ikhamanga in silver for her outstanding contribution to the development of SA art and culture in the musical fields of jazz and opera
Fellow musician Marah Louw said she was in shock and devastation over the passing of Sibongile.
“I thought why is this happening? I was just shocked. It is difficult when you hear such news. Even words of condolences don’t seem to have meaning any more. It is just shock. When ever you hear the phone ring, you fear the worst,” she said.
Marah revealed that she heard about Sibongile’s passing from a group she shared with the star and other musicians from the 1970s.
South Africa and the world at large has suffered a huge loss and social media is flooded with condolences for the late star.
Sibongile Khumalo was a lot of things to many people, including a mother figure, mentor, role model and an icon.
