These scholarships are based on your musical performance abilities or compositional skills, showcased through auditions or written scores. Read on to discover how you can apply for these scholarships, ranging from $2,000 to $8,000 per year.
Scholarship Details
College of Wooster Music Scholarships
- Eligibility: Incoming first-year students (transfers are not eligible)
- Award Range: $2,000 to $8,000 per year
- Reduced music lesson fees: Only $25/semester for half-hour weekly private lessons
Recipients of these scholarships are not obliged to major or minor in music at Wooster. However, applicants must perform in areas where the College offers instruction.

Application Process
To be considered for the College of Wooster Music Scholarships, follow these steps:
- 1. Complete the general application for admission.
- 2. Fill out the Music Scholarship Application Form.
- 3. Submit one or two letters of recommendation (from teachers or instructors in the respective field). Letters can be attached to the scholarship form upon submission or sent separately via email to mpuster@wooster.edu.
- 4. Attend an audition weekend at the Scheide Music Center on campus. Audition weekends are held in November and February, and attendance is highly recommended.

- Audition Requirements
Applicants should prepare a ten-minute performance of concert music (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Twentieth/Twenty-First Century) or jazz, selecting at least two contrasting styles from the Class A Solo Repertoire List (or its equivalent) from their respective states.
Singers must perform in English and at least one world language other than English, with the option to include a song from a musical.
Singers are required to perform with piano accompaniment (live or recorded) and memorize their pieces. Percussionists should audition on at least two contrasting instruments.
Composition Applicants
Those applying for a scholarship in composition should submit two representative scores. While recordings are encouraged, they are not mandatory.
Similar to other applicants, composition candidates may audition on one instrument or in voice, with percussionists required to audition on two contrasting instruments.
International Applicants
International applicants can submit recorded auditions, with all application materials, including recordings, postmarked by their selected deadline.
Expectations of Recipients
Scholarship recipients are expected to:
- Register for and perform satisfactorily in applied lessons on their audition instrument each semester, with a C-grade or higher, or a satisfactory audit (“L”).
- Participate in a large ensemble each semester, earning a passing grade (“S”) or a satisfactory audit (“L”).
- Fulfill additional departmental requirements based on their instrument or area of focus.
- These expectations typically align with students’ musical interests and activities.
- Additionally, music lesson fees for scholarship holders are reduced to $25/semester for half-hour weekly private lessons.
- Scholarships are awarded for a maximum of 8 semesters.
