New Warrant Of Arrest For Bushiri As Police Bars His Family From Leaving Malawi
Malawi police have issued a new arrest warrant for the Enlightened Christian Gathering leader, Prophet Shepherd Bushiri, and his wife Prophetess Mary Bushiri.
This follows after the police have barred Prophet Bushiri’s children Raphaela and Israella, cousin Esther Bushiri and mother-in-law Magdalena Zgambo at Kamuzu International Airport from flying out to Kenya to access medical assistance.
It was reported that police stormed Bushiri’s place of residence to effect the arrest but could not find the prophet and his wife.
National Police spokesperson James Kadadzera confirmed the new warrant of arrest that was issued to fugitive Prophet Bushiri and his wife to Malawitalk.
According to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services spokesperson Martin Gongolo the police stopped Bushiri’s family from traveling after suspecting that Bushiri was fleeing the country and wanted to dispatch his children away first.
Bushiri’s lawyer, Wapona Kita said he was going to court to challenge the arrest warrant and seek the court’s relief.
Kita claims Bushiri had gone to the mountain to pray when the police stormed Bushiri’s place of residence on Sunday with a warrant of arrest for the prophet Bushiri but could not find him.
Bushiri and his wife are wanted in South Africa on money laundering, theft, and fraud charges.
The couple claimed their lives were in danger and they would not have a fair trial when skipped bail in South Africa and returned to their native country Malawi.
Last year’s efforts to extradite Bushiri and his wife from Malawi to South Africa were fruitless. Meanwhile, their extradition hearing was however set for the 8th of March 2021.
