The European Union Delegation to Japan is actively searching for a qualified Policy Assistant – Trade Affairs Assistant to join its dedicated team. This role is instrumental in fostering EU-Japan relations and contributing to policy and legislative developments in the Trade Section.

The European Union (EU) is a profound economic and political alliance, uniting 27 European countries. It plays a pivotal role in international affairs through its diplomatic efforts, trade relationships, developmental assistance, and global collaborations. Represented abroad by more than 140 diplomatic offices, known as EU Delegations, these entities function similarly to embassies, championing the EU’s interests on a global stage.

The EU Delegation to Japan, established in 1974, works tirelessly to strengthen the bonds between the European Union and Japan.

Job Description: Policy Assistant – Trade Affairs Assistant

In this capacity, the chosen candidate will be responsible for managing the monitoring, research, and analysis of policy and legislative developments, and will actively contribute to the outreach initiatives of the EU Delegation in areas defined below in the requirements section.

Attractive Compensation Package and Benefits

This local agent group 2 position offers an attractive basic monthly salary of JPY 548,091. Successful candidates can also expect to enjoy full Japanese social insurance benefits.

The initial contract period spans three years, with the potential for indefinite renewal, subject to mutual agreement.

The role offers an enticing opportunity to work in an international, dynamic environment alongside a team of 16, including both officials and locally recruited colleagues.

Additionally, it provides the flexibility to work from home one day a week and involves limited travel requirements (4-5 times a year within Japan and an annual trip to Brussels).

Requirements for Applicants

Prospective applicants should meet specific criteria to be considered:

  • Medically fit for the duties.
  • Possesses civil rights and permits for employment under local law.

Language Proficiency

  • Possess an excellent command of both English (C1 level) and Japanese (C1 level).
  • Demonstrate mother tongue-level proficiency in the Japanese language.

Academic and Professional Qualifications

  • Hold a university degree.
  • Postgraduate and/or master’s degree.
  • A minimum of five years of relevant experience, including policy analysis, research, and interaction with Japanese stakeholders.
  • In-depth knowledge of economic and trade relations, climate change, energy, environment, sustainable development, corporate social responsibility, and related policies.
  • Familiarity with Japanese institutions and legislative/regulatory processes.
  • Proficiency in IT tools, including MS Office (primarily Word and Excel), internet usage, and relevant database applications.
  • A solid understanding of the European Union and its Member States.
  • Prior professional experience in diplomatic and/or international organizations.
