Our History
A PRIVATE FAMILY-OWNED COMPANY
What makes MSC Cruises different from our competitors is that we are not a corporation, we are a family! The fact that we are a private family-owned company gives us a special and unique outlook on our staff and our business. When you enter our business, you enter a world of family seafaring tradition and excellence!
A family of seafarers
The Aponte family records date back to the seventeenth century and testify to its long and unbroken activity in an area with ancient seafaring traditions – the Sorrento Peninsula – which stretches out into the Tyrrhenian Sea, separating the Gulf of Naples from the Gulf of Salerno.
From Naples and Sorrento, the city and town of their origins, the Apontes dedicated themselves to maritime transport as ship owners and captains.
The first mention of them dates back to 1675. The solidity of this ship-owning family, with traditions that stretch back across the centuries, brings MSC Cruises the unique character of a company conceived on and for the sea.
Our Founder
Gianluigi Aponte was born in Sorrento, Italy, in 1940 into a family of ship owners who operated a fleet of sailing boats and then motor boats on the Mediterranean. This company (Navigazione Libera del Golfo, NLG) still operates today, running a fleet of fast ferries in the Bay of Naples.
He started his career as a captain in the family shipping company, NLG. Following a number of years in the banking industry, Gianluigi Aponte established the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) in Brussels in 1970, subsequently moving it to Geneva in 1978. In 1988, the acquisition of the Italian cruise ship company Starlauro marked MSC’s entry into the cruise market and the birth of MSC Cruises.
