Data Scientist Opportunity at EGPAF in Harare, Zimbabwe

The Data Scientist will play a pivotal role in developing the Malaria module of the Mpilo electronic health system. This project is part of the DELTA 2 technical assistance provided to the Ministry of Health and Child Care of Zimbabwe.

The Data Scientist will work closely under the guidance of the Data Management Systems Technical Advisor and adhere to strict timelines. This assignment is a six-month commitment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Data Collection and Automation: Identify valuable data sources and automate collection processes, streamlining data acquisition.
  • Data Preprocessing: Undertake preprocessing of both structured and unstructured data to prepare it for analysis.
  • Data Analysis: Analyze extensive datasets to unveil trends and patterns that inform decision-making.
  • Model Building: Construct predictive models and machine-learning algorithms to improve data-driven insights.
  • Ensemble Modeling: Combine various models using ensemble modeling techniques to enhance accuracy.
  • Data Visualization: Create informative dashboards for stakeholders using data visualization techniques.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Educational Background: A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a relevant field is essential, and a graduate degree in Data Science or a related quantitative field is highly favorable.
  • Professional Experience: Proven experience as a Data Scientist or Data Analyst in the public health sector is crucial.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proficiency in data mining, machine-learning, and operations research is expected. Knowledge of SQL, JavaScript, Python, and familiarity with Java is an advantage.
  • Software and Framework Knowledge: Experience using business intelligence tools like PowerBI, data frameworks like Hadoop, and DHIS2 is preferred. Proficiency in collaborative project management tools like GIT and JIRA is beneficial.
  • Analytical Skills: Strong math skills, including statistics and algebra, are essential.
  • Public Health Understanding: A solid grasp of public health reporting indicators is vital.
  • Problem-Solving Aptitude: Demonstrated problem-solving skills.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent communication and presentation skills are necessary.
