Civil and Water Engineering Graduate Trainee Opportunity At Dabane Trust
An immediate position has arisen within Dabane Trust- Water Workshops. The organisation requires a civil and water engineering graduate trainee to join the team. This is an exciting opportunity for a recent graduate to gain valuable experience in the field of water resource management and to contribute to the organization’s mission of establishing water and food secure communities in semi-arid areas. The organization’s mandate is to increase and improve food production to alleviate poverty and hunger through sustainable land use and water management systems. The trainee will assist in the planning and implementation of projects and activities related to water harvesting and storage systems, community water supplies, irrigation schemes and more. Responsibilities
- Provide assistance to the Programme Manager in the planning and implementation of administration, training, and project activities.
- Undertake technical surveys and assessments, remote sensing, and groundtruthing of river basins, surface and groundwater supplies for community water supply systems, boreholes, clinics, and irrigation schemes.
- Identify, coordinate, plan, train and implement specific projects and community-based activities.
- Undertake surveys, project site assessments, data collection, recording and extrapolation of data.
- Represent the organization by negotiating, establishing, and maintaining contact with district and local stakeholders, local leaders and lead farmers to keep abreast of current situations and conditions in the rural areas.
- Design and supervise the construction of water retention and water harvesting systems such as sand dams and sand-abstraction systems.
- Undertake GIS remote sensing and land use mapping.
- Facilitate water quality testing at water supply points.
- Submit purchase orders and monitor project expenditure against available budgets and timelines.
- Assist in the preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual narrative and financial reports.
- Design, develop, fabricate or repair Dabane assets.
- Supervise and mentor interns in related areas of work.
- Use project training and implementation materials, goods, tools, and equipment responsibly.
- Assist the M&E, Information & Communication Officer with social media activities.
Qualifications
· A bachelor of civil/water or environmental engineering
· Experience with water resources management, especially sand abstraction, dam design etc
· Excellent verbal communication skills and ability to liaise with internally and externally project teams and stakeholders
· Able to communicate fluently in English and Ndebele
· Experience working in NGO related work
· Excellent written communication skills and ability to prepare technical reports
· Knowledge and experience in using QGIS, MODFLOW, HEC-HMS, AutoCAD, Google earth and relevant software
· Strong skills using Microsoft particularly Word, Excel and Powerpoint.
