Binga District is located southeastern shore of Lake Kariba in the province of Matabeleland North. It was established when the BaTonga people whose homelands were flooded when Lake Kariba was created.

Binga is a fishing, boating and cultural centre towards the western end of Lake Kariba’s southern shore.  It is reachable via tar and gravel roads from a turnoff along the main Bulawayo-Victoria Falls road near Dete/Hwange.   Binga has a servicable tarred airstrip accessible by small charter aircraft

What People Need To Know About Binga

It is only the only District in Zimbabwe with a sand beach, Hot springs, fishing, crocodile farm, game reserves, Chijalile Pass, and Swamps in the Simatelele Ward area, several stunning gorges, and natural rock outcrops.

The BaTonga people of Zimbabwe are found in Binga District, the Kariba area, and other parts of Matabeleland. They are mostly subsistence farmers who grow crops such as millet (nzembwe), sorghum (mayila) and they supplement this in a large part with wild plants, animals, and fish. Their crafts and hobbies are pottery, carvings, baskets, and mats crafted by older men and women daily.

Pots are made in various sizes for drawing water, cooking, brewing beer, and storing grain and other foods. Married women are expected to respect and cook for their husbands, observe traditional female etiquette such as looking downward and behaving humbly, while men are expected to take care of their wives
