5 Important Things You Should Know Before Leaving University

There are some very important staff that a University student should know before he/she leaves school or graduate. Most people just go to school for the sake of being educated or to graduate. They will not take the time to review their future after school. Below are (5) things students should know before leaving school:

1. Your actual friends after university are fewer than you think.

Most of us went through UNI without knowing anyone beyond classwork or assignments. What then happens after school? It’s a realization that you never had friends but just group mates and classmates who will forget you at the submission of the final assignment. Whilst some of them will stick with you in the long haul, think of all the people outside your academic circle you could get to know and connect with if you put an effort to do so.

Get to know people beyond books and class. Acquire some hobbies and share them, join campus clubs and spend real time with others. These are the people who will continue to have a relationship with you long after university ends. Thank me later!

2. You will always remember the “out-of-the-box” times.

You won’t remember the classes you attended (please attend classes!) or the assignments submitted on time. I hardly remember some of the course titles although I passed all of them.What you will remember, rather, are the adventures, the daring times and the out of the box memories you created, and if you are not creating memories, then are you really living?

Consider going off the well-worn path and take time to smell the flowers. Get to know your city and go out, serve your community, have fun, I mean do something with your time worth remembering.

And if it tickles your fancy, start a challenging journey for yourself and get yourself to accomplish something worthwhile. I am learning Ndebele, a  local Zimbabwean Language, published a book and picked up guitar in my final year of the engineering class. The memories I made during these pursuits, combined with the normal engineering student hurdles, is what I will never forget about the university.

3. No one is watching you.

Back then I was scared of what people would say and what people were thinking about me. What I didn’t keep in mind was that the most important opinion is MINE.

What I now do realize is everyone is so busy seeing what is wrong with themselves and with their own life to give a dime if you drive or not, or if you have the latest phone or dress a certain way. So, don’t go out of your way to please an audience because, really, no one is watching.

4. Grades matter…a little.

You are not breaking the bank when you make a distinction and you are not missing on life when you get a 2.1. So please, don’t stress yourself too much over grades. Grades are overrated. Your degree class will get your foot in the door, but after your first job, no one cares which degree class you got.

There are a lot more important aspects to your professional marketability and personal development, things like personal presentation, self-confidence, developing professional networks and your leadership ability.

5. A degree is only a tool

This I knew but life has a way to make you fully grasp its lessons only by personal experience.

A degree is only a tool. And the tool doesn’t do the work. It is YOU who will have to do the work. The tool only helps to make the work easier (that is if you can find the work in Zimbabwe: wink!). My point is, the struggle will not be over once you graduate. In my opinion, there are more hurdles to jump over and crawl under after graduation, more-so in Zimbabwe.

Not that in other countries they are specially exempted. Joblessness is on the rise EVERYWHERE but of course in Zimbabwe, we are ahead and lost in the curve. This then calls for innovative thinking and creativity on your part. Welcome to the jungle; adapt or go extinct.
