The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) is a global health organization dedicated to saving lives and reducing disease burdens in low- and middle-income countries. Our mission is carried out through partnerships with governments and the private sector, aiming to establish and maintain high-quality health systems.

Established in 2002 in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, CHAI initially focused on reducing the cost of life-saving drugs and improving access to these medications in countries heavily affected by the disease. In the past two decades, our scope has expanded to address various infectious diseases like COVID-19, malaria, tuberculosis, and hepatitis. Additionally, we have broadened our efforts to encompass non-communicable diseases such as cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and more. Our work now extends to accelerating the distribution of life-saving vaccines, reducing maternal and child mortality rates, combating chronic malnutrition, and increasing access to assistive technology. We prioritize strengthening health systems through programs in human resources for health, digital health, and health financing. Each program we develop is designed to maximize sustainable impact on a large scale, with a focus on enabling governments to lead the solutions and implementing programs that can be scaled nationally while sharing learnings globally.

At CHAI, we recognize that our people are our greatest asset. None of our work would be possible without the talent, dedication, and passion of our diverse team, which consists of individuals from 40 countries with a wide range of skills and life experiences. We are deeply connected to the countries we work in, with the majority of our staff based in program countries. To learn more about our exciting work, visit http://www.clintonhealthaccess.org.

CHAI is an equal-opportunity employer that fosters an environment of fairness and mutual respect, ensuring that all applicants have access to equal employment opportunities. We value diversity and inclusion and believe that our mission is best advanced by the leadership and contributions of individuals with diverse experiences, backgrounds, and cultures.

Project Overview:

Assistive Technology (AT) encompasses the delivery of assistive products and services like wheelchairs, hearing aids, and eyeglasses. The World Health Organization estimates that over one billion people worldwide require assistive technology, a number projected to double by 2050. However, only a small fraction of those in need, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, have access to these crucial products that enable learning, work, and full societal participation. In many of these countries, assistive technology is mainly provided through charitable donations, leading to fragmented service delivery that often runs parallel to public systems and relies on unsustainable donor funding.

According to a United Nations report on disability prevalence in Zimbabwe, 46% of older persons (60 years and over) have disabilities, and this figure is projected to rise to 56% by 2050. The country faces challenges related to road traffic accidents and an increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases, emphasizing the need for robust assistive technology provision. However, access to AT in Zimbabwe is hindered by limited human resources, challenges in policy implementation, lack of stakeholder coordination, and inadequate service delivery.

CHAI has been successful in partnering with governments in low- and middle-income countries to create supportive environments for assistive technology. Through these partnerships, we have developed national strategies and plans for scaling up AT, conducted surveys to gather data on AT needs, and assessed capacities using the WHO ATA-C tool. This work has generated baseline data, built momentum, and brought stakeholders together to transform AT provision in countries such as Ethiopia, Liberia, Nigeria, Malawi, Rwanda, and Sierra Leone. Presently, CHAI is collaborating with governments in Lesotho, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe to conduct AT capacity assessments, develop strategic policies and plans, and mobilize domestic and donor resources. Under the project “Building a Pipeline of Countries for Assistive Technology Investment,” CHAI aims to enhance AT accessibility and affordability by supporting the development of data systems, national policies, procurement guidelines, product and provision standards, and implementing government-led programs and market-oriented interventions.
