Position: Technical Specialist – Gender Equality, GBV, and Humanitarian Response
The Technical Specialist for Gender Equality, GBV, and Humanitarian Response is responsible for leading the Gender Unit at the UNFPA Zimbabwe Country Office. This role involves overseeing programming, delivery, and reporting on Gender Equality, Gender-Based Violence (GBV), and Human Rights within the context of Zimbabwe’s development and humanitarian nexus. The Specialist will contribute significantly to the design, implementation, coordination, and monitoring of UNFPA program activities related to Gender Equality, GBV, and gender and population issues in both humanitarian and development settings across the country.
The Technical Specialist will provide leadership and technical support to the government, local development partners, and implementing partners to ensure effective program implementation, efficient resource utilization, quality results tracking, coordination, policy advocacy, and clear communication of UNFPA’s mandate, work, and results in both humanitarian and development settings.
The Specialist will work under the guidance of the Representative and directly report to the Deputy Representative.
Job Purpose:
Under the supervision of the Deputy Representative, the Technical Specialist will substantially contribute to accelerating efforts towards advancing gender equality and equity as a human right, reducing Gender-Based Violence (GBV), teenage pregnancies, HIV and AIDS, and poverty in alignment with the Zimbabwe National Gender Policy (NGP). The Specialist will be responsible for the effective delivery of an integrated package of rights (SRHR/GBV/HIV/HR) in Zimbabwe and will oversee the Gender Unit of UNFPA Zimbabwe.
The Specialist will prioritize sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) from a gender perspective, ensuring they remain prominent on the agendas of local governments and development partners. By employing a Gender Mainstreaming approach, the Specialist will optimize resource allocation, create synergies, influence policies, and enhance the consistency and effectiveness of UNFPA’s work within the country’s evolving development-humanitarian context.
Qualifications and Experience:
Education:
Master’s Degree in Gender, health, population, demography, development, law, or other related social science fields.
Knowledge and Experience:
- A minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible professional experience in development and population activities.
- Extensive work experience in the field of Gender, Gender-Based Violence, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights.
- Specialized knowledge and experience in GBV response within the development-humanitarian nexus and integrated SRHR/GBV/HIV approaches is highly desirable.
- Experience in program/project management, including large multi-sector programs.
- Experience in implementing legislation.
- Field experience is required.
- Prior experience within the UN system is necessary.
- Excellent communication skills and experience in managing staff across multiple locations.
- Substantial work experience in the field of Gender, SRHR, GBV, and/or Gender in humanitarian and multi-hazard emergency settings is preferred.
- A thorough understanding of the UN system in general, particularly UNFPA’s mandate, policies, operations, and current development topics and political issues in Zimbabwe, will be an advantage.
- Demonstrated ability to work in and lead a team.
Languages:
Fluency in oral and written English is required. Working knowledge of another UN Official Language is an asset.
