Human Rights Watch (HRW) is actively seeking a dedicated Researcher and Advocate to join their United States Program.

United States Program: Advancing Fundamental Rights
HRW’s United States Program is committed to safeguarding the rights and dignity of every individual subject to the US government’s authority.
Prioritizing criminal justice, immigration, and democracy, this program focuses on racial justice and equity as integral elements.
Collaborating with allied organizations, the program conducts research to evaluate ongoing racial human rights violations, set remedial goals, and advocate for change.
The scope of engagement extends to reparations for slavery, Indigenous peoples’ rights, as well as education, environmental justice, labor, health, and housing rights through a racial lens.
Responsibilities: Making a Difference
The Researcher and Advocate will play a vital role in advancing human rights through various responsibilities, including:
- Identifying and analyzing race-based abuses, exploring the underlying factors and effective avenues for change.
- Researching, documenting, and monitoring human rights abuses through various sources.
- Tracking legal and policy developments regarding racial justice concerns at federal, state, tribal, and local levels.
- Producing reports, policy analyses, media releases, and other publications to highlight human rights issues.
- Assisting in the development and implementation of advocacy strategies to achieve racial justice and equity.
- Collaborating with partner organizations and directly affected individuals to ensure responsive and impactful work.
- Engaging in public forums, speaking duties, and representing the US Program’s work effectively.
- Travelling when necessary to conduct research and advocacy work and collaborate with colleagues.

Requirements: Knowledge, Experience, and Skills
- Advanced degree or relevant experience in journalism, law, social sciences, international relations, or related studies.
- Minimum three (3) years of relevant experience in investigations, advocacy, government, organizing, communications, or social justice litigation.
- Profound understanding of racial and social justice issues in the US and demonstrated ability to conduct impactful research and advocacy.
- Experience in combatting structural barriers entrenching racial and economic discrimination, collaborating with directly impacted organizations.
- Exceptional writing, editing, interpersonal, and strategic thinking skills.
- Strong planning and organizing abilities, initiative, and ability to work under pressure.
- Sound judgment and decision-making skills consistent with the role’s functions.
Salary and Benefits
The position offers a salary range of USD 77,000 to 85,000, along with comprehensive employer-paid benefits, including medical, dental, vision, disability, and life insurance.
HRW provides a retirement savings plan and grants twenty (20) days of annual vacation. The organization offers relocation assistance and will aid employees in obtaining necessary work authorization.
